The Dobsonian Telescope - David Kriege & Richard Berry - Most of this book focuses on large aperture truss tube design, but there is an excellent section on building and 8-inch Dobsonian also. A Newtonian Optical Tube Assembly.   You should get an 8-inch Dobsonian. That’s it. An 8-inch Dobsonian. We’ll go into more detail later on about what a Dobsonian is and why this is the type you should start with, but suffice to say this telescope is the sweet spot that will give you the best experience without spending a lot of money. There are many brands that make Dobsonians.

In this new book by Allan Hall, Choosing and Using a Dobsonian Telescope, you will find all the information you will need to make the most informed choice on your purchase. Whether you are watching the skies from the comfort of your own backyard, or using your telescope at a remote dark site it pays to get the right equipment. "A Practical Manual for Building Large Aperture Telescopes". Believe me when I say without this fantastic book, my scope would not have been possible. Reviews “This book is full of exceptionally useful advice and ideas, and is not only for those planning to build a telescope from scratch, but for anyone with a Dobsonian telescope of whatever design, who wants to see how they could improve its workings.” (Astronomy & Space magazine) “If you ever wanted to build a really large telescope, the cornucopia of information the The Dobsonian Brand: Willmann-Bell.

Dobsonian Telescopes. In the s, John Dobson's simple new telescope design revolutionized the hobby of amateur astronomy and brought "sidewalk astronomy" to the masses. More than half a century later, Dobsonian telescopes are still a favorite among experienced stargazers for providing the hands-down best value-per-dollar on the telescope market.

Be prepared to buy another book on basic Newtonian telescope design, because this one doesn't get the job done. Good info on the Dobsonian (mounting) part and some good information on mirror cell design but woefully and pitifully incomplete on the design of the optical assembly. Nowhere near worth the money in my opinion/5(58).

Dobsonian Telescopes. A Dobsonian telescope is a Newtonian reflector mounted on a simple yet stable alt-azimuth (lazy Susan style) mount. These telescopes are named for their designer, John Dobson, who sought to build a low cost large aperture telescope.

No other design has had a greater impact on amateur astronomy in the past half century. You don't need to have expensive high end setup to start doing Astrophotography.

Technically Dobsonian (Alt-Az design) mounted telescope is designed for Observational purpose only but if you have a Digicam or DSLR capable of connecting to the telescope at prime focus you can do some descent Astrophotography right off the setup without need of expensive tracking mountsetup.
